CRM Is An Extremely Important Part Of Any Business

By Lindsay Main

Consumers drive the success of any number of businesses. No business plan can save a company if it doesn't implement a successful customer service strategy. The largest competitive advantage a business could have is it's customer relations management, also called CRM. Without one of these programs it is useless to try and expand a company.

A century ago, before the availability of modern technology, business owners and customer service associates depended on their own memory and an extensive array of log books and written notes to deal with their customers' needs. During that time one business would see only a limited amount of repeat customers in its vicinity. Today the issue is much more complicated.

The average consumer has the ability to switch between many merchants as they see fit. The majority of businesses are not limited by distance any longer. The globalization of businesses due to the improvement of communication and transportation technologies has allowed people to search for the best deals for the products they need. Suppliers are numerous and scattered all over the world, each with a better deal than the last.

It is because of this variety of choice that companies have been focusing on keeping current consumers happy in the hopes that they will repeat their patronage. It is well known that the cost of keeping a current customer is much lower than the cost of luring new customers in. It is for this reason that customer service strategies are at an all time high.

A globalized economy has made it possible for businesses to have millions of customers all over the world. Clients often need assistance with their accounts, especially with corporations like phone companies, cable companies, and air transit corporations. Customers in the millions will mean customer service representatives in the hundreds if not thousands.

All managers and customer service representatives receive sensitivity training and customer relation management training. These associates are also provided with CRM software which was created to keep detailed account of consumers. The software will track everything from paid bills, account changes, inquiries and customer service notes in an electronic record.

CRM programs allow businesses to keep track of their customers activity in order to better market to them. Based on the activity shown in the program, a company can come up with detailed strategies as to what consumers like and need. They are also able to better serve them by having all their account changes dated and conversation notes detailed. This protects the consumer and the supplier financially and legally.

Purchasing CRM software, training employees to use it, and keeping those employees on full hire can be too expensive for some companies. Many smaller to medium sized businesses purchase a hosted CRM service for which they pay a monthly fee. Hosted CRM services specialize in providing businesses with outside customer service representatives. Businesses simply patch a number through to the company and a representative will research the account of the caller and assist them.
