Achieving The Best Out Of An Airbrush Fake Tan

By Haywood Hunter

Few things can lift the spirit like a suntan does. It gives you healthy-looking skin, makes your white clothes look fantastic and can even make you look trimmer. However, the same sun that causes that beautiful glow also causes skin cancer and premature ageing. A sunless tan is a great way to get the benefits without the risks. Having the product airbrushed on will ensure that the results are even. Most salons offer an airbrush fake tan.

With a sunless tan, a chemical called dihydroxyacetone, also known as DHA, reacts with your dead skin cells and turns them a darker color. DHA is a carbohydrate and in many cases it's derived from plants containing lots of sugar. A small number of people have allergic reactions to DHA and it's advisable to do a patch test on your skin before getting an airbrush fake tan.

For the product to work, you need some dead skin cells for the DHA to react with. For this reason, it's best not to remove these cells through exfoliation before getting an airbrush fake tan. You may want to get rid of loose skin cells, though, to ensure that your airbrush fake tan will be even.

Get rid of unwanted hair before you go for your session. If you shave or apply wax or hair removal creams afterwards, it will remove those skin cells that have been colored during the procedure. The result will be that your airbrush fake tan fades at a faster rate.

Before the beautician can apply the airbrush fake tan product to your skin, you should ensure that your skin is totally clean and dry. Products like lotions form a barrier around the skin and prevent the DHA from doing its work. However, for parts that you don't want to become discolored, like the palms of your hands or the soles of your feet, you should apply skin cream.

For the procedure itself, you can wear what you'd like to, whether it's a swimsuit or nothing at all. Remember that if you wear a swimsuit, you'll be left with tan lines. It's also good to remember that DHA reacts with certain fabrics and won't only stain your clothes but will also affect your airbrush fake tan. For this reason it's best to wear loose-fitting clothing afterwards and avoid wearing a bra for a couple of hours.

The reason why sweating can mess up your new airbrush fake tan is that the product needs time to develop your new skin color and water will stop the process. Instead of a liquid deodorant, use talcum powder to keep your skin dry and sweat free. Stay out of the rain and wait at least eight hours after you've had the airbrush fake tan applied before you take a shower or go for a swim.

Your airbrush fake tan will last longer if you refrain from exfoliating your skin. For that first shower after the session, apply a gentle cleanser to your skin and use your hands to lather it in. A washcloth or sponge will remove too much of the product. Keeping your skin well moisturized will prolong your airbrush fake tan but remember to apply sun protection as well, since your skin is still vulnerable to sun damage even if it looks tanned.
