A person who is employed as a guard protects others, as well as their possessions. Protection is provided against theft, violence and other kinds of damages. There may also be other types of duties that are called for by the employment position, especially when it comes to commercial security solutions. The type of protection offered to a company or business will vary according to the size of the property, the alarm and other types of protection devices installed and the number of guards that are needed.

The size of the premise would normally dictate whether a guard is patrol oriented or static oriented. In the former case, the guard will normally move frequently across the premise to ensure all is well. The static oriented guard is stationed at a fixed location such as the gate or lobby but sometimes this guard may also make few movements. Actually, the nature of the job of the guard would depend on the size of the promise.

In a nutshell, a guard's role is to ensure safety, keep check of any violence or theft and to intensively patrol the premises he has been placed. He is expected to fully serve his employer and is therefore entrusted to provide security against law breakers, and stay put in case of any events that may result in any financial or physical losses. In the case of larger institutions, a higher director is usually the one in charge of directing these duties.

The core responsibilities of a guard can be summarized as: Safeguarding the premises assigned to him from any threats and acts that may cause violence; performing regular checks within the building on a daily basis; closely observing persons coming into the building and watch closely for any intruders; to keep an eye on and when required, drive armored vehicles for the safe transportation of money and other valuables to various destinations.

An excellent guard should be able to communicate well with his fellow employees, and with clients, and should be licensed to carry appropriate weaponry. He should be skilled in the use of firearms, and should be quick to react to possible dangers. Other noteworthy characteristics include trustworthiness, alertness and reliability. It is also advantageous if he knows first-aid.
