Some tips and advise when looking after your wood burning stove by yourself. You can always ask an expert's advise if you are unsure on what to do. When caring for your wood burning stove always think of safety first when making any changes .

Often overlooked but very important would be the glass door at the front of the fire. There are specialist cleaning products which are ideal cleaning agents for your fire glass as they melt away any debris left on the front instead of your household products which run down the front once you spray.

Remember when looking around the hard ware store for cleaning materials that you buy only products which are suitable for fires and are non flammable. If you are in any doubt ask a member of staff for assistance in selecting the correct product for your stove .

Checking areas of the fire over for any damage include the ashes pan which should be changed over if any damage can be seen and also the grate.

Fresh fire rope can be replaced easily in the fire by using adhesive which is known to be suitable for wood burning stoves. Anyone not familiar with this is a cord normally white in colour which goes around securing the glass and any doors on the fire.

Try and use the WD40 spray oil which is perfect for removing any awkward stains or spills on your wood burning stove stand.

Summer time seldom sees the fire being lit so take advantage of this time by leaving the door open for ventilation. Take the time to polish your fire if its look a bit tired over the winter time and repaint using special paint only suitable for stoves.

Re-grouting the stove is also a summer job which is best left to this time of year if regrouping allowing the grout several days to seal and settle and is best not applied in the winter months when using the fire.
