Driving Around Ireland Advice

By Poppy Hill

Planning a family holiday in Ireland you won't be disappointed with the scenery. In order to make the most of your stay you are better off renting a car for your journey and time in the country. Buy a good travel book before your arrive into the country and read up on as many tourist attractions as you can before deciding on your itinerary for the holiday. Before you leave your home town try practising driving on the left in your car park of your local store to gain confidence.

Anyone renting a car in the UK and Ireland will have an excess to pay for the rental vehicle. This is a deposit which is held on your card until the car is returned undamaged . The branch staff will be able to help you select a product which will help you lower the excess. There are a number of different policies which drivers can buy at the branch or before they arrive. This is referred to as CDW which is short for collision damage waiver or deductible .

In the USA and Canada and some other countries , credit card companies can offer protection for drivers when they rent a car and may cover them for the CDW of the rental. As the terms vary for each country you visit call them and double check before you leave for your holiday and explain what is happening when you go on holiday. They may not be able to offer cover for car hire in Ireland but at least you will know before you arrive allowing you the chance to do a little research into the best policy for your trip.

A few things you need to remember when collecting your car from Londonderry for you rental to run smoothly and they are important documents such as your driving license , please remember and bring both parts if you hold a new style UK license otherwise any license which is written in English is acceptable by staff. Credit card and passport are also required at collection points. Booking your vehicle before you travel is essential to ensure a good and fair price.

Similar to the UK there are a few rules which are law and if not adhered too will result in a fine and a criminal record. One of them is seatbelts which needs to be worn by all passengers including children.

There are some things which are not allowed when driving in Ireland and they are no drinking any alcohol and then driving as this is against the law and you will receive a fine and a day in court . The same rule goes for texting and speaking on your mobile phone. Wishing to use your cell phone pull over and stop the car then start using your phone. If you need to drink alcohol leave the car and take a cab.
