Making Your College Apartment Feel Like Home

By Hedrick Lepsch

When you move into a college apartment for the first time, it can be hard to make those cinder block walls feel like home. Many people struggle feeling like their dorm is actually a place that they can relax and enjoy their spare time.

No matter where you live, it is possible to find a way to make your home smell good. When you start this process you will want to sit down with the people that live with you so that you are able to understand what smells they do and do not like.

Talk with your roommates about ways that you can add some personal touches to your dorm or your apartment. Decorate with throw rugs or even with posters and you will find that your personality can surely be manifest in your dorm. You may also want to buy more lighting. Purchasing some lamps or even string lights can be a great way to make sure that you have enough lighting and it can even add a lot of personality to your apartment.

If you have pets in your home, you should be sure that you control their odor. It is important that you understand how often you should be grooming and bathing your pet so that your pet does not bring a bad odor into your home. You should be sure that you take the time to talk with the groomer about any odor problems that you may have. After you deodorize your pet you will also want to make sure that you are vacuuming and cleaning on a consistent basis.

For being an "old wives' tale" it certainly seems to be a very real issue. With so much modern technology and information available, how does this continue to happen? Candles are placed too closely to something that could burn, e.g. furniture, mattresses, curtains, or decorations (with decorations reigning supreme during the holiday season). Candles are left unattended.

As the wax is warmed, it will emit the smell that you usually get from your candles. Many companies have even developed scented light bulbs and these can be a great option to ensure that your home always smells good.

Finally, make sure that you establish a habit of open communication with your roommates. The people that you live with are going to make the biggest difference in the way that you feel at home and establishing open communication is essential to feeling at home.

Once you have removed the bad odors from your home you will want to replace them with good smells. Take the time to find a way to make sure that even the snooty sniffer that comes into your home will be happy with the smell. While you are doing this, be sure that you take time to find some good candles. There are a lot of different candles out there and many different smells that you can start to create in your home when you want your home to smell good.

Establishing a cleaning schedule and sticking with the schedule can be a great way to minimize much of the contention that is often felt in college dorms. When you establish your cleaning schedule, you should make sure that you schedule your chores into your schedule.

Make sure that you take the time that you need to understand where you can buy these. Some companies sell different incense that you can also use in your home. Find what you like and make sure that you stock up on it so that your home always smells good.
