Canthaxanthin is a dye more like the chemical responsible for the orange color in carrots. People use it as medicine and it usually occurs naturally or can be developed in the laboratory. It works through depositing in the skin producing an artificial tan.

The chemical has been widely adopted to reduce light sensitivity, also referred to as photosensitivity. Mostly those having this rare condition suffer a very rare genetic disorder known as erythropoietic protorphyria. When this group of people is exposed to light, they show a number of reactions including itchy skin, rash and eczema. The chemical is used when seeking to deal with sensitivity to light caused by certain medications.

The substance also helps to protect against prostate cancer. The pigments of the photochemical in its partially saturated form have betaionone rings that affect cancerous cells. With the high rate of prostate cancer cases, this chemical is potentially lifesaving and should be widely adopted. Its medicinal value is not in any doubt as world-leading scientists have certified it.

Researches that have been done have proven that it is safe to consume the chemical in food amounts. However, it may have negative side effects when taken in very large amounts enough for commercial tanning purposes or for medicine. People who have had the substance in the said amounts have experienced loss of vision and eye damage. High dosage is also likely to cause aplastic anemia, stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea, orange or red body secretions, itchiness etc.

Pregnant women should not use canthaxanthin as it may have certain harmful effects on them like eye damage. It is also not recommended for people who are allergic to vitamin A. Doses of 60 to 90 mg for three to five months per year is what experts say produce positive effects on the users. These may be people who have itchy skin and rashes.
