Tips for getting the most out of skip hire

By John Weber

To help yourself get the very best value from hiring a skip, you should take the time to accurately estimate the amount of waste that you want to dispose of before you go ahead and hire the skip. It is better to have too much capacity than too little, so always add a little extra to your estimate to allow for this.

Is your skip location suitable?

Your location should be chosen carefully, ensuring that your property cannot be damaged when the skip is being moved. You should take into account such obstacles as gates, garden features and low walls. Ensure that anything that needs to be moved to allow for the skip to be put in place is moved before the skip is delivered. Skips need room to be manoeuvred, so it is very important to have sufficient clear space. You should also consider weight; if the skip is to be filled with weighty items, consider carefully the surface upon which the skip is going to be placed, as too much weight can damage your driveway.

You can place your skip on the road if you have insufficient space on your driveway. However, you will need a licence from the local council first. The charge for this varies from council to council across the UK, as well as the notice period required. Your skip hire company should be able to advise on the cost and procedure for your local council.

Try to estimate the amount of rubbish

There is no point wasting money unnecessarily on a large skip if you only need a mini skip. Making sure you have the right sized skip for your individual needs means you can save money for more exciting things.

Do you need a permit?

If you place your skip on any council property, including public roads and grass verges, you are legally require to obtain a skip hire permit from your local authority. Your skip hire company should have details on the procedure for this, or you could contact the council directly to ask for information.

Break down large waste

If you break down the waste going into your skip you will get better value for money. For example, if you are disposing of an old wardrobe, it will take up far less space in the skip if you dismantle it into smaller pieces before putting it in the skip.

Filling your skip effectively

If you have large items such as an office desk or wardrobe, it is best to dismantle them before loading into the skip, to ensure you make the best use of space, and therefore get maximum value for money. Have your toolbox to hand; your tools may prove useful when filling your skip.

Ensure your skip isn't too full

It is important to avoid over filling your skip as this can be very dangerous, and is another good reason to make sure you choose the correct skip size. Your skip hire company may refuse to collect an over filled skip on health and safety grounds.
