What Everybody Ought To Know About Overhead Garage Storage Shelves

By Joseph Kraehenbuehl

Don't let the accumulation of clutter keep you from enjoying the usefulness of your garage. It's supposed to be a place to park your car, although you like have a workbench and other tools in there as well. It likely has some organized storage, but you need more floor space.

Install shelving, cabinets, racks, and other storage products in this versatile space. Create a zen-like space of order and serenity... or at least get rid of the stress and trouble the mess is causing. If the next task will be to organize your garage, take advantage of this information to help you reclaim your garage.

Well organized garages across the country - especially buildings without basements - have found they are able to mount a shelf to the ceiling. Instead of tripping over heaps of boxes, move them into a ceiling mounted rack.

Hanging garage storage racks help you organize your garage. Put one of these in your garage so you can clear floor space. This tool will help you overcome that mess. Store commonly used items in convenient places like wall shelves and cabinets. Use the ceiling alternative to keep seasonal and seldom used belongings in an out of the way spaces.

A rack with a flexible design should install with or across ceiling joists, and either along or away from wall(s). Ceiling mounts should extend across multiple joists. Normal dimensions are 4' x 8' or 4' x 4'. These dimensions are common because they span across 12", 16", or 24" joists evenly.

A few companies advertise racks in incrementally smaller sizes, too. You should definitely install them securely to ceiling joists. It's also possible to chain together several racks with each other to maximize space for storage. Drop height (vertical installation measurement) vary from 18" to 46".

Many racks use 14 gauge steel and are powder coated in either white or gray paint. Shop for durable industrial strength construction so you can feel safe it won't collapse once loaded. Solid decking helps keep the shelf from sagging, bending, or breaking over time. C-channel framing is more rigid and sturdy than Z-channel or L-channel, especially for 8 foot spans.

Avoid multiple trips to the hardware store by ensuring all the mounting hardware is included. You waste time searching the hardware store for anchor bolts that will fit through the pre-cut holes on the wall mounts and are long enough to go into your ceiling joists.

You can load overhead racks with between 250 lbs and 1,000 lbs, depending on its weight rating. The installation instructions for some floor shelving say the weight should be distributed evenly. That's how many free-standing shelves pull off advertising their shelving have a nice "2000 lb" limit... although not one of the particle boards on a 4-tier shelf holds 500 lbs.

Be sure a racks exclusive framing and decking types haven't sacrificed the strength of the shelf. Scan customer reviews and check their opinions prior to making your final decision to purchase. Find out if the rack measures up to the promises on the package (or website) and that other people are confident and satisfied with the strength of the unit.
