Born in 1969, Kern attended Gibsonburg High School in Ohio, USA. He then graduated from the Bowling Green State University, He has since been active in the film world since 1996 and his works can be seen until the present. His film career started off in Northwestern University, he was a video editor from the years 1996 until 2002, which really set the stage for him to be involve din the film business.
He was involved with AOL-Time Warner from 2003 to 2005. During these years, he worked for the company as both an editor and producer. Afterward, he also was able to establish Mythopolis Pictures. This he established with Singaporean news presenter Genevieve Woo. Later on, he also established his own time lapse company, TK time lapse that specializes in time lapse footage.
The debut film he made was A Month of Hungry Ghosts. This was released in Singapore on August 7 of 2008. This feature was nominated as Best Film at the Singapore Film Awards. This was part of the 22nd Singapore International Film Festival. The second film he helmet was Afterimages. This was released on September 11, 2004 in Singapore. This is coproduced by Genevieve Woo.
The second film that he successfully directed, Afterimages, was successfully funded through crowd sourcing, as well as crowd funding. It is to be noted though that is was able to secure the Media Development Authority production assistance grant. In the Network of Asian Fantastic Films, an awards competition that took place in Busan, South Korea, the film's script bagged the award.
What he has accomplished so far is proof that there are a lot of raw talent out there just waiting to be discovered. All too often, directors have become too used to the idea of staying in the mold to come up with films that are going to be surefire hits.
