The Role Of 6061-T6 Aluminum Pipe In Construction

By Iva Cannon

The alloys of aluminum are made in two main groups. These are the casting alloy and the wrought alloy. The two alloys are made for unique areas of applications and have different properties. However, for the ordinary applications, the wrought alloy is the more common of the two. It is made by extrusion and rolling process followed by forging into the shape desired. In order to make the product even harder, the heat treatment and cold working are some of the processes that can be used. In the process, the 6061-T6 Aluminum pipe are among the possible products.

In order to understand its properties in details, it is best to understand how and why it is named so. The aluminum alloys are usually given 4-digit number for identification. The common series such as 2XXX for instance, are those with copper content. The 4XXX series contain the silicon while the 6XXX are the aluminum alloy series with magnesium and silicon in them.

In addition to this, alpha-numeric suffixes are added to the 4-digit number as an indication of the degree of hardness or temper. In the case of 6061-T6, the T6 is used to indicate that the alloy solution was heat-treated and then artificially aged so as to reduce the chances of distortion. For additional numbers on the suffix, it simply indicates additional process such as stretching for stress-relieving.

With this in mind, it is easy to discuss the properties of 6061-T6 aluminum. The main two properties are the structural strength and toughness. In addition to these, it is known to offer very good finishing characteristics and well as responding well to anodizing, particularly the hard coat, clear, and clear and color dye.

In its pure form, aluminum is actually soft and reactive metal and does not qualify for most structural applications. However, alloys such as the 6061-T6 is completely a different case. It is widely used in manufacturing of structural and other components that are meant to be long lasting. Their high strength-to-weight ratio gives them particular preference for construction of light structural parts that are to be strong and light in weight such as some plain components such as fuselage and the wing.

The other area where these alloys are commonly used is in the construction of water crafts. The water crafts are designed to be light in weight without compromising on their strength, and this is the solution. As such, they are common in sailboat masts, yacht hulls, lightweight boat, and for fabrication the flat-canoe bottom. They are also preferred for the frames of the bicycles.

As such, they are the optimal choice for your piping solution in any form of construction. In fact, they are the most widely used metals after steel and it is easy to come across them. The builders find them easy to handle and weld. Although they are available in most hardware stores, without proper understanding, it might be difficult to make the right choice.

As such, the 6061-T6 mark is necessary to ensure that you are getting the right pipe for your use. It can be available in many hardware shops or even from online stores. The option of online purchase comes with advantages such as the ability get choose from several vendors and the possibility of getting lower prices.
