Cable TV has pretty much caught up to satellite television when it comes to level of quality, customer service, and cost, but there are several differences between the two you'll want to bear in mind if you're considering paying for satellite or cable television. The both of them are compared below.
Cost
On average, cable TV costs $10 to $25 a month more as compared to satellite television due in part to the fact that cable TV companies have to pay local area fees and taxes which satellite TV companies don't have to pay for.
Where I reside in Arizona if I were to order cable it would cost me $57 a month for 140 TV channels. If I were to purchase Dish Network satellite TV service it would cost me $25 for 190 TV channels.
The rate increases is another difference. Cable Television service has increased by 40% since 1998, while satellite TV service has increased by a mere 8% within that same time frame.
Equipment Evaluation
When you order cable TV, their providers supply you with a cable box, or a receiver that receives the TV signals through a cable that runs underground. The signal is received and converted by the receiver and delivered to your TV set.
If you choose satellite TV, you'd be supplied a satellite dish that captures signals that originate from satellite and a receiver that translate those and then sends them to your TV.
For both systems you'll need a receiver for every television in your house that you'd like to view cable or satellite TV programming on. You would have to pay a monthly fee of about $3 to $5 for each cable box receiver you have connected to your TV sets. But your receivers are completely free of charge with Dish Network and DirecTV.
DVR
Digital video recorders, or DVRs, allow you to record your favorite shows. You can also, in addition to recording, fast forward, rewind, and pause live television programs to enable you view programs you missed, take your calls or skip through a commercial.
There's only 100 hours of programming, or 2 television shows to record simultaneously using the typical cable DVRs. This simply means you would be unable to see a third show if you have three shows running at the same time and you want to record two as you can only either record two or view one and record one at the same time.
Dish Network, on the other hand, lets you record 6 different shows simultaneously, and you'll be able to record up to 2,000 hours of programming, so you won't miss of your favorite television shows. DirecTV offers you the ability to record 1,000 hours of programming, and 4 different TV shows simultaneously, if you please.
Installation
Both satellite television companies, as well as most cable television companies, will install all of the equipment required to receive their programming for free. Be sure the company installing your equipments uses professional installers so you do not have any form of equipment breakdowns down the line.
