For A Fire Extinguisher Massachusetts Is The Way To Go

By Scott McDonald

Fire extinguishers are pieces of equipment used for active fire protection. They are used to extinguish or control small-scale fires, usually in emergency situations. The devices should only be used in minor situations and not in cases where fires have grown out of control. When in need of quality fire extinguisher Massachusetts offers a nice place to pay a visit.

The device consists of a hand-held cylindrical pressure vessel that contains a fire extinguishing agent, which is released when the device is operated. There are also devices that do not consist of cylindrical pressure vessels, but these ones are less common. In most countries, especially the United States, commercial and industrial buildings are required to have some kind of device for extinguishing fires.

Annual inspection and servicing of all extinguishers installed in buildings is required in most jurisdictions. The inspection may have to be done more regularly in some places. There is a mark that is placed on the device to show the kind of service carried out by the service company. Services carried out usually include replacement, inspection, and recharging among others.

Generally, there are two kinds of extinguishers in use currently. The two types are cartridge-operated and store-pressure models. In stored pressure gadgets, the firefighting agent and the expellant are stored within the same chamber. Propellants vary with the kind of agent used. Nitrogen is the main propellant used in dry chemical extinguishers. On the other hand, air is used in foam and water extinguishers. Stored pressure varieties are more common than cartridge-operated models.

In cartridge-operated extinguishers, expellant and extinguishing agents get stored in separate containers. The expellant is exposed to the agent by puncturing the cartridge. The use of cartridge-operated extinguishers is often limited to industrial applications where they are used more regularly than average. Their simpler and prompter use makes them better over the other model. It takes a comparatively shorter time to discharge and recharge the device than store pressure devices.

Compressed carbon dioxide is the propellant used in cartridge-operated models as opposed to nitrogen which is used in the other variety. In the US, the cartridge-operated model comes in various forms including foam, water, dry chemical, wetting agent, and dry powder. Another classification of extinguishers has two other types, that is wheeled and handheld extinguishers. Wheeled extinguishers are also known as cart-mounted extinguishers.

Handheld models are usually very light, weighing between 0.5 and 14 kilograms. The light weight makes them easily portable. The wheeled varieties are usually relatively heavy, weighing over 23 kilograms. The wheeled models are commonly found at airport runways, docks, marinas, heliports, and construction sites among other sites. They have handles for use to pull them from location to location.

The location where handheld devices are installed in buildings are usually easily accessible by anybody. Typically, they are placed somewhere on the walls of places with high traffic. Watercraft, aircraft, and automobiles must also be installed with the devices in most jurisdictions. There are standards governing the height at which the equipment can be installed along the walls.
