Necessities Of Disaster Survival Kits

By Sandra Wilson

Storms, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions and fire can occur any day. Some people think that such things might never occur where they live and lack preparedness. To survive such things, emergency preparedness is a must. Even those who decide to be ready for such calamities often do not know what to include in their gears. The chances of surviving a disaster with an incomplete gear are minimal. The following are some essentials of disaster survival kits.

One crucial thing that must be packed is nonperishable food. Refrigerators will not be available after a disaster. You might also not get the chance or a place to cook food. Packing up some food in packs that have a long shelf life can help. The food packed should be ready for consumption and should at least last for months. Even if you stay for long without experiencing a natural calamity, always change the food to keep it fresh.

Similarly, bottled water is compulsory. Earthquakes and floods cut water supply in homes. Because people are left with no water to drink, some are forced to cook and take dirty water that leads to the outbreak of water-borne diseases like cholera. Protect yourself and family from such disease by stocking enough water that will push you until the time you get clean drinking water. Pack at least three gallons for each member of the family.

Some of the people who die during some disasters lack a way of communicating with rescuers. If you are trapped in the ground after an earthquake and the power is off. Having a solar lamp in your gear can save you because the phones will not go off. If it is at night and the rescuers cannot spot you, the torchlight can act as an alert signal thus saving your life.

Furthermore, keep a full first aid kit among these other things. After a calamity, some of the people who survive suffer serious injuries. Instead of watching injured people die due to loss of blood and pain, including the box full of bandages, disinfectants and medicine can make a difference. By giving these people first help, they can live long enough before receiving medical attention.

A warm outdoor shelter is another crucial item. If the storm damages the house, it will be unsafe to spend the night there. Having tents, sleeping bags, blankets and warm clothes can help keep your body warm throughout the night. With all these items, you can comfortably spend a night outdoors without being exposed to cold.

Moreover, personal health and hygiene should also come first. Pack some toothbrushes, toothpaste, bar soaps, and toilet papers. A pail or bucket is important too since it will serve as a toilet. With these items, you will stay in good shape until the disaster ends.

Finally, things like ropes and knives must be in the kits too. With all the above things in your survival gear, you will come out strong after the disaster since you were ready with all the necessities. Do not let the gears stay for a year without changing some of its content like food.
