Useful Information Regarding Gator Hunts

By Gregory Powell

Alligator is considered as a commercial renewable natural resource. As such, controlled harvesting has been allowed by the government as one of the ways of managing the population of the animals in the wild. Several different programs have been launched by the federal, state, and local governments to ensure that conservation and harvesting activities of alligators are done correctly. Harvesting brings direct economic benefits to the people, but it must be controlled to preserve the numbers of the animals. This is worth knowing about Gator hunts.

There are a number of reasons for which alligators are harvested. Their prized leather is among the major reasons. Harvesting these animals to obtain leather has been done for a long time, dating back to the 1800s. Back then, the harvesting was largely unregulated. This nearly led to the extinction of the animals. Alligator harvesting dropped in the 1950s since the population of alligators had depreciated immensely.

Some laws were imposed in relation to harvesting activities to help in restoring the number of alligators. There was a time when harvesting of alligators was stopped and banned to allow the numbers of the animals to rise again. When the ban was enforced, the numbers grew rapidly during the period. As a result, there was a high number of alligators to facilitate commercial harvesting. Nowadays, there are many thousands of hunters of alligators who are licensed in the United States.

These licensed alligator hunters are responsible for hunting some several hundreds of thousands of these animals annually. Before licensed hunters can hunt alligators, they must be issued with a tag. Tags are issued by the state only to licensed alligator hunters. Usually, tags are nontransferable, which means that they cannot be used by another person other than the person they are issued to.

Apart from getting a license, the hunter should also own land where they intend to hunt. For those hunters who lack land, locating land that qualifies for the activity is advisable. This means that they should seek to be granted permission separately to hunt on the land. The hunters normally apply for permits earlier before the hunting season reaches so as to avoid being inconvenienced.

The issued tags are normally particular to the intended property. As a matter of fact, the tag has the information concerning the land for which it was handed out. As a result, hunting on a land different from the one highlighted on the tag is illegal. It is a legal requirement that hunters have their tags and licenses on them while hunting.

It is allowed for friends, other people, and family members to help hunters. The people who offer help must also be licensed to do so. They are permitted to hunt while on their own too. The license of the helper is costly and contains their names. It also has the license number of the hunter who is being helped.

Hunting season tends to come at the same time in the various states in the US. The season typically lasts 30 days depending on the location. People are allowed to hunt during daytime alone. Nighttime hunts are prohibited in most places because of the dangers associated with the activity.
