The Way That Amazing Wood And Metal Sculptures Are Created

By Ann Harris

Sculpture creation is an art form that impresses and amazes many people. They are beautiful to look at and last for many years. Most people have very little idea of the amount of work that goes into creating them. How amazing wood and metal sculptures are made is an incredible process. They both use different tools and techniques to make something that is long lasting. Some of the oldest ones are many centuries old and this is one of the oldest craft forms in existence.

Wood carving is a specialized art form. The sculpture has to select the right kind of wood for the feature and use tools of different sizes in order to make the creation. Different types of wood have qualities that have their own benefits. Hardwoods typically last much longer than softwoods but are harder to create. The softer material can be easily manipulated but do not last as long. They both are susceptible to termites, other bugs, and weather and are usually displayed indoors to keep them protected and in good shape.

There are a lot of varying types and shapes of tools for woodworking. These include carving knives, chisels, gouges, and sandpaper. The sizes and shapes of the ends of the tools help to create fine lines and larger flowing shapes. This type of work is difficult and it is not hard to make a mistake. This prevents the sculpture from working fast. They must work slowly and deliberately to create their perfect work of art.

The block of wood is the first thing selected. The artist will take time removing larger sections to get to the point that the general shape begins to form. As they continue to carve, they will begin using smaller tools to make more precision cuts and grooves. In the end, they will use the different grades of sandpaper to smooth and finish the shape.

Metalworking has some similar methods for the original design but then differs greatly. The history for this type of sculpture does not go as far back as the woodworking craft but still has a long history. They make a mold and then after several steps are able to create the actual metal formation. Most of the techniques are the same but with some modern changes in the material.

The tools used here include wax and rubberized molding materials as well as ceramic. The same tools may be used as in woodworking in order to create the original design. Many will start with clay since it is tougher than wax and more malleable than different types of wood. The artist can easily start over or fix a spot on the clay formation without having to start completely over.

An initial form may be made from any material including wood, clay, or other material. The next step is to make a rubberized mold that will hold the shape. The wax is then poured into the mold to make another copy. This copy is then fine-tuned by the artist until it is just right. An external shell is then made from sand and ceramic. The wax is then melted away and bronze or other metal is poured into the mold and allowed to cool. The ceramic is broken away and the final sculpture is again fine-tuned in order to make it perfect.

Creating art is something that goes back to prehistoric times. The art of sculpture creation goes back several centuries and some believe predate written communication. They have been used for decoration, religious display, to honor leaders, and in museums.
