Divorce Records Vermont Database

By Claire Dowell

When a married couple has some irresolvable issues between them, they usually end up in divorce. Divorce, like marriage, is an important event in one's personal life as well as the community, thus it has to be properly documented. Vermont is only one of the many states that have allowed its local residents to access the Vermont divorce records.

Although divorce records are publicly available, the information on it is limited only to the basics of the event. One can only find the names of the couple involved as well as the date and the place where they got legally separated. Other important information that is related to financial matters or the custody of the child is kept away from the public. Also one would not be able to find the reason for the separation on a public document. This was done to protect the privacy of the couple.

Divorce records are needed for several reasons. When a divorced individual has plans of marrying again, a divorce certificate has to be presented as proof that he/she is not married. Those who wish to make sure that the person they are dating is really single as they claim they were can check the marital status through the divorce records of the state. Although the information on it may be of little help, divorce records are also one of the documents used in genealogy research.

The office of the Department of Health under the Vital Records Section is where all public documents of Vermont are being managed. This includes the divorce records of the state. This is especially true for records that are within 5 years since it was registered. The State Archives then handles files that are beyond 5 years. Requesting for the document can be done by sending a mail order. Enclosed on the envelope should be all the necessary requirements needed to process the request. Also the payment has to be in the form of a money order or a personal check. A $10 fee is needed when a certified copy is needed but asking or verifying where the divorce took place does not cost anything at all.

It is a lot easier to get a copy of a divorce record nowadays. The development of the Internet has made the search easier and convenient. Vermont is also using the Internet to allow the residents to easily obtain the document.

Several websites now offer to do the search for you. This helped make the search easier and convenient. Also the record can be obtained faster. Some websites provide their service for free and some for a fee. However, there are fee based sites that may not be able to give a certified copy of the divorce decree.
