How To Retrieve Your Wedding Ring From The Sink

By Leslie Moore

May it be an accident or pure recklessness, the fact that your wedding ring has been washed down from the sink will keep you regretting and blaming yourself that you should have kept it away from such a dangerous place. You may say that it is easy to buy another ring but since it is a wedding ring, this won't be a valid excuse to yourself and to your wife as well. Reaching the ring from above may be your first solution but think about it again. Your hand may be stuck because of your panicking. Snap out of it as retrieving it from a sink can be very easy. May it be a bathroom sink or kitchen sink, getting your wedding ring back is just a few steps away.

Retrieving it from the Kitchen Sink

Due to many cases of wedding rings falling down the kitchen sink, plumbers place drain traps to catch earrings, rings and other important things that may be washed down. This is indeed a very big help for someone like you as it will make the problem much easier to solve. First, make the place comfortable for you to work at. Remove everything that may obstruct you from working under the sink. Prepare to catch everything that will fall once you have opened the pipe by placing a towel or two and a wide pan underneath.

Find the trap which is a U or J curve that is located at the bottom part of the sink drain. If there is an access plug, remove it but if there is none, loosen the trap with a pipe wrench. Remove the trap after it has loosened and hold it carefully over the pan. Turn it outside down for the water and the ring to drain out. Put the trap back in, tighten the connectors with a wrench and examine the sink for leaks. Now that you have got the ring, sanitize before wearing and make sure that it won't be washed down the sink again.

Dealing with the Bathroom Sink

Saving your wedding after it fell from the bathroom sink can be a very easy task. The only thing that you have to do here is to disassemble the P-trap without using a lot of tools. All that you need is a bucket for catching the leaks, a pipe cleaner to remove the stuck dirt from the pipe and your bare hands. Prepare this before operating under the bathroom sink.

First, turn off the water from the faucet so that the ring won't be flushed out of the J-bend which collects metal objects after being washed down from the sink. Locate the J-bend, place the bucket underneath and unscrew the slip nuts with your hands. After a few efforts of sliding the slip nut and applying a gentle downward pressure, you will be able to extract the J-bend out of the sink. Dump the contents and see your wedding ring coming out of it.
