Changes in health and safety policies

By Rachel Harris

The human race is capable of being a lot more innovative and inventive, but stifling laws, health professions, and safety professions have held back progression. A society that is forced to use standardized methods and never allowed to deviate from the norm, will fall behind when it comes to innovative growth. Sticking to tried and true procedures isn't always the best choice because some of the systems are fundamentally flawed and without innovative thinkers, we won't make progress.

While there is some flexibility to challenge the logic of such regulations, people are more comfortable in static, unchanging situations in which they are familiar. There are some industries that defy the norm and seek innovation and welcome change. To these industries, change is no adversary, and they aren't bound by conventional ways and standards like the rest.

Our society is set up to investigate what people have done wrong and prove them liable for causing accidents, instead of looking at the innovative side of things. Perhaps the individual was trying to implement a change for the better, or introducing a new procedure. These factors are overlooked when investigating accidents.

In organizations, the risks are always the enemy. They are regulated and controlled so that rules can be followed strictly, just as procedure calls for. There are different methods for doing things, even if they haven't been discovered yet. If we look from a different perspective, though, we might be able to discover a better way of doing things, since we have not only focused on what went wrong.

The internet is full of pictures portraying people who disregard the safety procedures as reckless fools just because they were trying to get the job done. These people are belittled in a self-righteous way and held as an example for all to see and pity. Everyone who is human makes mistakes and the health and safety professions are not exempt. The important thing is that mistakes are used as learning tools in the future so that growth can happen through learning.

Buried within these examples are people who were implementing an innovative idea to get things done efficiently. The public neglects to see that there is more to the accident than the wrongs. No one will admit there might have been a better way of doing things because it fell short. There is still a positive aspect to the situation and that is the birth of a new idea.

It is true that acting on innovative ideas can be dangerous and that trial and error in needed before it is considered reliable. Sometimes ideas are acted upon to quickly in the moment and a possible outcome hasn't been determined or evaluated. An idea in its earliest stages is often very dangerous when acted upon impulsively.

It is still important to follow safety guidelines. However, we shouldn't be so quick to judge the innovative thinkers of the world. We can also broaden our perspectives when it comes to standardized thinking because there are more ways to do a job safely than just one.
