How To Make An Arabic Turban

By Kate McMahon

One of the many vital features within the Arabic faith is the turban. An Arabic turban is an item which must be possessed by all baptized persons. It is normally viewed as a sign of being courageous, honorable, holy and self respectful.

Many methods can be used when tying the headgear, with the most common one being a wrapping that is taken round the head at least seven times. Its main feature is that it has a high centre and its sides are relatively flat. The following are the steps followed when tying a turban.

First and foremost, you should have a 5 meter piece of fabric which you may purchase from a craft, textile or online stores. To remove the extra starch that it might have, you will need to wash it well. Along its length, fold the fabric into half up to four times. You can get some help in order to do this well.

The edges of the fabric should be flush as it is lined up. Using both hands, the fabric should be carefully rolled up. Form a long rope with your hair by gathering it at the front and twisting it several times.

Form a loop with the twisted hair and place it at the top of your head. Using a piece of square cloth such as bandana, tie the hair. The tie should be at the back and in case there is any excess cloth at the back then it should be brought to the front and tied here. This piece of cloth is worn under the headgear and is commonly referred to as Patka.

With the help of your teeth, grasp the rolled up turban end. Roll it slowly to the back of the head and around the ear. This needs to be between 2 to 3 inches above the right ear;s side. After the first wrap, you should ensure that the left ear is not fully covered.

For the second time, wrap the headgear round the head. The wrap should be high on the left and low on the right, contrary to the previous one. The next wrap should be at the opposite side.

You should then wrap it five more times around the head. Ensure that the wrapping is higher on the left and much lower on the right as compared to the previous wrap. With pair of scissors, cut the excess material at the end of the roll. Make sure you leave enough material that will be tucked on the left side near the back.

The last step is taking out some inches out of the initial wrap. Spread the material over your head after carefully unfolding it. Ensure the head is completely covered by holding the material's sides and tucking it into the part of the headgear that goes round the head. Any material that is left out in excess should be tucked behind. You will have the best Arabic turban if you apply these simple steps.
