When Should You Rent Tools For Home Improvement Tasks

By Denise Jackson

One of the benefits of owning a house is that one can make upgrades. Many homeowners enjoy home improvement projects. In order to make theses improvements, it is necessary to have the right tools for the projects.

A basic toolkit should be a part of every household, whether one rents or owns the property. The kit should have a few hand tools as the bare minimum so one can make small repairs or complete other projects. For example, one will want to have a tape measure, adjustable wrench, utility knife, pliers, screwdrivers and a hammer. In addition, homeowners may want to consider buying locking pliers, saws, socket sets and a cordless drill.

Most of the time you do not need to purchase all the tools at once. Select quality tools over those that are cheap. Ask for specific tools as gifts for birthdays and holidays. Avoid junky tools that can break and cause injury to you or others.

Some projects will require specialty tools. For example, if you plan to install a hardwood floor, you might need a flooring nailer. Drywall projects often require special tools that may only be used once in a lifetime. For such projects, it is often more economical to rent tools instead of buying them

Sometimes, it will be better to buy the larger tools than to rent them. For example, a portable table saw can be stowed in a small amount of storage space and is fairly affordable, especially if you plan to do a lot of woodworking projects. However, if you only foresee use of a tool for a one time project, a tool can be expensive to buy and require room for storage. Rental makes a better choice.

One might consider a cost analysis in determining whether to rent or buy. Be objective and realistic as to how often the tool will be actually used. Divide the cost of the tool by the number of uses to determine cost. However, renting may be a better choice even when more expensive if storage of the tool in a secure location is a problem.

Home improvement can be emotionally and financially rewarding. It is essential to have the correct tools. Whether they come from your toolbox or a rental store, the correct tools provide a more professional finish while reducing the amount of work needed to complete a job. Renting can solve the storage problems for large pieces of equipment.
