How To Install Drywall Like A Pro

By Carol Richardson

Learning how to install drywall professionally takes time and a lot of practice. For guaranteed results, do not hesitate to call your local specialist to handle your drywall concerns. Without much experience, problems can escalate if you attempt to install it on your own.

Since drywall panels can be heavy, it doesn't hurt to bring someone with you for an extra hand. Do not forget to wear protective clothing and footwear to avoid accidents. Wearing a dust mask is helpful to prevent inhaling dust particles during sanding.

After removing the old drywall panel, inspect the back wall to look for signs of damage. Experts recommend using metal studs to avoid having rotten or moistened wall studs behind the drywall. Metal studs provide great strength in securing the drywall in place.

To prevent the drywall from collapsing, make sure each end land on a stud for an added support. Professionals usually apply a coating of glue on the joist to maximize adhesion.

You can now hang the drywall horizontally, starting with the top panel first. Use drywall screws or nails to attach it to the studs and make sure the nail heads are just below the surface. Doing this creates a flat and even surface when finishing.

Cover the drywall seams and joints with a fiberglass mesh tape and use a mud to cover the tape pieces. It is best to use a wide blade putty knife to squeeze the excess mud under the tape. Flush the drywall by applying a thin layer of mud once the base coating dries.

Remove the remaining imperfections by sanding the surface lightly. Prime the drywall twice before painting. Do not overlook this step since a joint compound can dry up the paint easily. After all, nobody wants to have a dried drywall panel hanging inside their houses.

Call your local drywall specialist if you are not confident in installing drywall on your own. Observe how they do it to learn different tips and tricks during the process. You can also read articles and watch videos online for added references.
