Texturing Drywall - Techniques For Beginners

By Brian Winters

Once you have a smooth and flat surface, texturing drywall shouldn't be a problem. You can use scraps and small drywall pieces for practice if you want to perfect your technique before proceeding to the actual task.

When working with a new drywall panel, see to it that all joints and seams are taped and covered with compound. For old drywall panels, apply a thin layer of mud and lightly sand it when necessary. Applying primer before texturing helps prevent the drywall from flapping.

Before you proceed, it is best to secure the area and not allow anyone in your household to enter the room until the repair is finished. Cover your furniture with plastic sheets or cloth to protect them from dusting. It doesn't hurt to wear protective clothing and footwear while carrying out repairs to avoid accidents.

If you'd like to go simple, you can use the exact paint color of your existing drywall by giving it a light and clean texture. For a bumpy drywall texture, let the paint stick to a stippling roller as it dries. Paint-on texture can be added to paint to create a neat finish.

Hopper guns can also be used to texture drywall. Hoppers usually blow the texture material through a nozzle with the use of an air compressor. The nozzle, air pressure and texture consistency can be changed to adjust the drywall texture.

Premixed texture in spray cans can produce orange peel and knockdown drywall textures. However, do not hold the nozzle too close to the wall to avoid having an unnatural look. Since spray paints can be expensive, it is best to use this method for small-scale repairs only.

If you want your creativity to take control, go all in for the hand-applied texturing. In this method, it is vital to get the right consistency of your drywall mud to spread it evenly on the surface area. Use different tools like taping knife and brushes to texture the wall easily.

Do not hesitate to ask a specialist if you need help in texturing your drywall. It pays to learn more tips and advice in texturing drywall before attempting to go solo.
