A Brief History

For millenia massage has been utilized as a healing tool across many ancient civilizations. Chinese culture used massage methodologies as early as the Zhou Dynasty 1122-207 BC documented by the oldest medical manuscripts. Swedish exercise was developed in the 18th century by a Dutch medical-gymnastics practitioner, Per Henrik Ling. Principally influenced by Chinese philosophies on exercise and health, Ling designed exercises to boost strength and suppleness. A progress of Lings practices and philosophies were adapted into a system of massage movements by the Dutch consultant Johan Georg Mezger, of which became known as Swedish Massage. These are the very techniques in what we use today in remedial massage.
