Custom doors and windows are available in a range of styles and finishes. The basic styles can be customized to your specification by adding frames, panels and glass. The doors and frames are usually manufactured from solid hardwoods such as mahogany and can be treated and stained or painted to your specification.

Make sure that you are buying your door and fitments from a reputable supplier. Check that your fitter and the manufacturer are industry and state registered which implies a degree of quality and competence. Do not hand over any money or sign anything until you have a written contract for services and have checked all the small print. Damage can occur during transit to the buyer. It is important that the buyer should visually inspect the door when it is delivered and any damage reported to the supplier immediately. Once you receive your door and window frames store them as instructed by the manufacturer. You will need a space which is clean, cool, well-ventilated and out of direct sunlight. Wear appropriate gloves when handling the products and take care not damage them when moving them before you are ready to start installing them.

Preparing the door and frame for installation is an important part of the process. Wipe them down with a clean dry cloth to remove any dust particles. If there are other marks which are harder to remove, lightly sand to remove. Try out your stain product on a small section to ensure it produces the effect you want.

If you are preparing your door and window frames for staining, first use a pre-stain conditioner to prevent streaking when you apply the stain. If you want to paint your doors and windows, apply a moisture resistant primer and allow drying before applying your paint. Lack of preparation can result in streaks and variations in the finished color. Custom hurricane rated impact doors and windows will cost more but will ultimately provide value for money when installed and cared for properly.
