About Becoming A Journalist

The journey of being a journalist, just like any other profession, begins with a single step. But before you become one see to it that it is really your passion to be one. Being a journalist starts with writing. It is important that you should love writing because the pen is the weapon of a journalist. When it comes to writing you should have the skill to be able to communicate your thoughts objectively. You should also be open to criticism from other people such as your professors, editors, and your readers.

You should be aware of the different career paths of a journalist. There are a lot different types of work that a journalist does. They not only write reports and conduct interviews; they also do a lot of research. Keep in mind that you should have the capability to weigh accurately the significance of facts and information. You should be able to handle the different that will be given to you such as to report during breaking news. You will be asks also to provide a thorough analysis of politics and current events. There is also a chance that you will handle the entertainment, sports, and weather reports. You can also work on the print media such magazines and newspapers.

Mass communication with an English degree is the advisable course that you take up. There are a lot of Universities who offer this but you should only choose the best most especially the one that offers a quality education. To help you build self-confidence and have an experience about what journalism is all about, you should take up an internship. You might lucky enough to become an intern of a big media network or you can be a part of the college's newspaper, radio station or television. An internship can really offer you a lot of benefits which you can use in the future.

After you finish your degree it is time to find job. You can ask for a recommendation from your professors. Some of them have connections on media companies because they may be working part time or have friends in these companies. Send your resume along with your portfolio. There are competitions so you should not expect to land on a job immediately. You just have to do the best you can.

Once you land on a job remember to still continue to study and improve your skills as a journalist. You can always join seminar trainings. Remember that to always be professional and be responsible journalist. You need a lot of hard work and perseverance to become successful.
