Interesting Michigan State Trivia

By Joyce McIntosh

If you plan on attending Michigan State University in the future, it is a good idea to know a little bit about this school, which has the ninth largest student body in the United States. Here are a few interesting facts about Michigan State, the home of the Spartans.

Michigan State is the nation's first and oldest college of agriculture and actually was known as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan when its doors opened in 1855. Back then, it was a school for men only and there were fewer than 65 students during the first year. In 1870 it became a co-educational university when a home economics major was added to the curriculum. In 1964, Michigan State University was adopted as its official name.

As MSU is member of the Big Ten, it holds a lengthy and renowned record for the athletics. The football team of MSU is known to have beaten Stanford University in 2014, their most recent achievement in their five participations in the Rose Bowls. And of all these participations, they only lost once which dated way back in 1966 to UCLA. Much pride for their men's basketball is the fact that they have won two of the NCAA championships and NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson has this institution as his alma mater. There are 13 intercollegiate sports for women, and 12 sports for men including hockey, swimming and golf, as well as the aforementioned football and basketball.

There are nearly 20 different colleges within MSU offering a variety of four-year and graduate degrees. While the school is well known for its College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, there are also colleges for veterinary medicine, human medicine, law, engineering, education, music, nursing and much more. Within each college, there are many different areas of study and degrees that you can earn. For example, within the College of Arts and Letters, there are majors in several different languages, theater, women's studies, philosophy, art history and more.

Since it is important for students to have social interactions in the campus, MSU guarantees hundreds of groups to join in. Regardless of your interest, you are sure to find a club or group in the campus which can cater to you. Examples are geography club, geology club, ballroom dance team, a Quidditch group as well as clubs for those practicing a specific religion or a club for those interested in watching Doctor Who. Every student is encouraged to join a group as there can be something for everyone and it's the best way to meet other people and be interactive.

If you are a student living in a dorm you can effectively eliminate the tedious task of packing and hauling things for home, come school breaks. You can easily rent a Bath mini storage unit or even the likes of a mini storage in Haslett, mini storage in Dewitt, mini storage in East Lansing or Okemos. Be sure you find that your self-storage facility has adequate security and allows you for monthly unit rental along with student discount.
