Shopping At Thrift Stores Hanover PA

By Jaclyn Hurley

The recent economic down turn has really made a lot of people think more carefully about how they spend their money. When times were good they could simply buy everything new and throw away things they no longer wanted. Yet the big market crash has really forced many people to start looking for better ways to shop. All of these factors are combining to make thrift stores Hanover PA more popular than ever.

Thrift or consignment shops were long considered the domain of the hippy earth mothers. People avoided them because they often thought that buying used items was a sign of poverty. But now all that has changed. With the serious economic downturn savvy shopping has become a huge trend. Mom's now compete to see who can get the best deals and proudly post on their Facebook page when they get a particularly great bargain.

It seems that the huge market crash of 2007 and its related fall out is actually having some very positive effects around the country. Pennsylvania is no exception and families are realizing that making do with less is really not such a bad thing after all. It challenges them to really think about what they spend and to learn about making priorities. These are important life skills that many people have never had the chance to learn. Growing up as a savvy shopper can really be a great model for a lifetime of conservation.

Caring for the environment is also a huge buzz word. Children learn in school that everyone is responsible for trying to reduce, reuse and recycle. There is no better way to do this than by shopping at community consignment shops. They help everyone in the area to buy, sell and give many items a new lease on life.

Clothes and shoes are also sold in many consignment stores. Many parents are finding that this is the perfect place to find barely worn children's clothes. They can save a significant amount of money and have their kids kitted out in some of the most desirable brand names.

As children get older they can be very tough on their clothes, especially boys. Many moms are now dedicated thrift store shoppers who find they can kit out their boys with lots of name brand pants, shirts and sweaters for a fraction of the typical cost. When girls need a special occasion party dress the local consignment will have a great selection at just a few dollars each.

Toys, books and games are usually offered as well. Plastic toys will last for years and there are some great bargains to be found, especially for shoppers who make the effort to stop by on a regular basis and see what is available. Electronics are also very good sellers, along with video games and DVD's. It just makes sense to spend a few dollars for a barely used item that the kids will be bored with in a matter of weeks.

Families all over the country are really tuning in to the advantages of shopping at a local thrift store. It also helps to promote a strong sense of community and many great friendships can be made. Even as the kids grow older there are many great sports items available to great prices.
