How To Become A Good Land Surveyor

Land survey is the science of determining boundary points in a divided land. It is a method of gathering information about the physical earth. Surveying is employed as guide in the making of maps and the setting of property boundaries. This requires the use of mathematical laws and principles of physics.

There are many people who are in need of the services a surveyor can provide. Some of these include construction and mining companies, professional survey companies. Real estate developers also work closely with an Alberta land surveyor, and his or her services can be employed by the federal, provincial, and municipal governments. If you do not like to work for an employer, you can also be self-employed.

To qualify, an aspiring surveyor must possess excellent mathematical skills. Since your work with require measurements, you must be fairly good with numbers. You must also have a profound understanding of subjects related to this profession such as geometry, trigonometry, algebra, computer and even drafting. Aside from these you must also have excellent organizational skills.

Physical qualities required include a good eyesight and overall physical strength. You must also have the stamina to work outdoors even in bad weather conditions at any time of the year. If you think you do not have the physique of a surveyor, do not worry. Exercise a lot and focus on squats, reaches, stretches, bends and lifts to achieve your goal.

Other personal characteristics needed include a strong ability to visualize objects, sizes and distances. Extreme patience is also a must, along with a keen attention to detail. Good communication skills and the effectivity in working within a group will also help you succeed in your chosen path.

You must complete a series of tests, the first one being the Fundamentals of survey. Once you pass this first test, you will be regarded as a surveying intern. There are many companies offering internship to fresh graduates, and those with good grades have better chances of being accepted.

After passing the first test, you will be considered a surveying intern. Stack up on learning experiences during your internship. This usually lasts up to four years and is completed with the aid of a certified land surveyor. You can apply for internship with architectural firms, engineering firms, mining companies and many more. Since surveying is a broad area, it is essential to choose an internship that is most suited to your specific field of interest.

After your internship you will be required to take up another exam, which is the Practice and Surveying Exam. After you pass this one, the next examination is already the final licensure exams administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. You will need to review and prepare both mental and physical faculties in order to pass this one an obtain a license.

Upon becoming a professional in the field you have chosen, it is now time to apply all that you have learned during your college days and your intern years. An entry level surveyor makes twenty two thousand dollars annually. Stack up on experiences because an experienced worker can make up to thirty thousand dollars. This more or less compensates for all you have been through.
