Landscaping Around Pools

By Darren Hartley

The primary concerns in landscaping around pools are privacy, safety, beauty and convenience. Beauty and privacy around a swimming pool are provided by plants. They soften the harsh lines of swimming pool equipment and help swimming pools blend more naturally with the surrounding environment.

Privacy screens can be put up around the pool area by growing plants that are tall enough to cover it from eavesdroppers. This particular technique for landscaping around pools necessitates the choice of low maintenance plants. Imagine the need to fish out leaves from the pool day in and day out should you mistakenly surround the pool with large deciduous trees.

When landscaping around pools, fruit trees that are messy and flowers that are pretty must never be considerations at all. Why? They have a certain flair for magnetizing bees into the area. A good alternative would be broadleaf evergreens that include hollies. Plants with invasive root systems are a no-no as they are sure to damage the pool in a matter of a few years.

The safety of little children is a major concern in landscaping around pools. Their presence makes fencing and outdoor lighting prerequisites to the landscaping. The right fence design not only makes the pool safe but also private in nature. If the fencing is not enough, growing vines over the fence will surely provide the privacy you require.

Landscaping around pools with patios or pool decks not only provide aesthetics but also safety to the scenario. Imagine landing on a slip-resistant surface of a scarred concrete patio after climbing out of the pool. What could be safer than that? Opting for a brick patio would need a rough surface for the bricks.

Another option in landscaping around pools is the set up of a closed gazebo. The convenience it offers around pools is unparalleled. Imagine a place to change in and out of swimsuits and clothes as well as a shade under which to relax in. To complete the convenience, you can throw in outdoor furniture and furnaces to the set. As a final touch, you can provide barbecue equipment as well.
