Good Effects Of Donating To Sickle Cell Charities For Kids

By Annabelle Holman

No one is an island, or so the famous line says. While most scoff at the absurdity and the lameness of the adage, it does have a ring of truth into it. People really do need other people for survival. Humans are not made to live alone, as Mother Nature has decided for the human race to be social creatures who need others for a rich, full life.

Of course, wanting a charmed life is not a sin, and doing all that you can to get there is not, either. But, because one is busy looking up, he tends to forget how happy it is below. They forget that the view over there might be better, but it is a lonelier place. This is why some rich and successful people do not really feel happy, so some of them just give back to sickle cell charities for kids to make up for everything.

Sickle cell disease is actually a form of anemia. It is characterized as having abnormally shaped red blood cells. Instead of these forming a round shape just like the other healthy ones, they have pointed ends, which gives them the look resembling a sickle, hence the unusual name. These thin and pointed things can block the narrow vessels and deprive the part of the oxygen due to them.

SCA does not stop there. It brings along a wide spectrum of other diseases to attack the body. Since it deals with bloodstreams and the like, the spleen is among the organs to be affected. The mutated cells cause the spleen to cease normal function, called hyposplenism. This then leads to a decline iun the immunity levels of the body, leaving one very wide open to infections.

This anomaly is also believed to be the root cause of a wide array of complications. For starters, a patient stricken with the illness has an increased risk of bacterial infections. This is due to the loss of function by the spleen. Hyposplenism, or malfunctioning of the spleen, can lead to decreased immune reactions.

These infections can even have adverse effects to the bone. Most SCA patients develop osteomyelitis, a bone infection which lists salmonella as its main cause. Aside from osteomyelitis, ischaemia can also manifest itself, almost often followed by vascular necrosis that hits the joints as well as the hips.

Being inflicted with this disease will not only eat up on the health, but also on the pocket as well. It is a very serious condition that demands quality medical attention round the clock. Of course, this is not for free, and could reach quite a huge sum, even with benefits and insurances alike. It is not then surprising that people turn to charities for help.

People have their qualms about donating to charities, especially because some are actually revealed to be nothing but scams. But, donating to the right charity will not only help the victim, they will help the giver as well. Giving to the less fortunate gives one a definite sense of purpose.

It is also good for your mental and physical functions, too. It also opens your eyes to see that there are so many things to be thankful for the things that you are enjoying. Even when you think you have it bad, there will be far more things worse than your suffering.
