Some Of The Best Scandinavian Prog Rock Bands

Progressive rock still remains a popular genre in music to this day. Fans of this type of music should definitely check out the Scandinavian prog rock bands that are currently on the scene. The genre is extremely popular with Scandinavian people of all ages. Prog rock began with the Beatles album, Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club band and the early acid fueled psychedelia of Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd.

Beardfish are a progressive rock band from Sweden that are definitely worth checking out. There music can be compared to Genesis or Yes, but brought into the modern era. The band formed in 2001 and have a few different musicians since them. There first album is called Fran En Plats Du Ej Kan Se and was released in 2003 to critical acclaim.

Another band to check out form Sweden are the Flower Kings. This great band was formed in 199 b the renowned veteran guitar player, Roine Stolt. The group has released 11 albums in their careeer and their music is inspired by blue and jazz. They utilise ployrhythms, vocal harmonies, dynamics and abstract lyrics.

Norway's Magic Pie blend a 70s sound with contemporary music. The band creates strong melodies, interesting lyrics, powerful vocal arrangements, sparkling guitar riffs, 70s organ hooks, and a solid rhythm section. There music can be soft and gentle or blistering heavy metal. Magic Pie formed in 2005 and have released three albums, with another due in 2014.

The Finnish back, Apocalyptica were formed in Helsinki in 1993 and are very unusual in that they have three cello players and a drummer, instead of the usual guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. The band has three classically trained cellists and the band produce a unique form of progressive heavy metal music. They started life as a Metallica covers band on cellos but soon starting creating their own music.

Another Finnish prog rock band is Spacefolk who create beautiful and exciting music that blends folk music with space rock. They use many instruments, including violin, didgeridoo, cello, mandolin, marimba, sitar and vibraphone, as well as guitar, bass and drums. They formed in 1999 and have created eight albums in their successful career. The band has remained on an independent record label and have achieved cult status among progressive rock fans the world over.

Kingston Wall are also from Helsinki and create beautiful music that is influenced by the likes of Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. Their music combine eastern themes with vivid psychedelia producing a lush space rock. The band have remained an underground outfit and a cult favorite with progressive rock fans. They have released three albums, as well as several remix albums and a live DVD.

Moon Safari from Sweden have a symphonic instrumental sound that incorporates complex vocal harmonies. These harmonies are an important part of their sound and as well as guitars, bass and drums some of their best songs are performed acapella. They experiment with unusual time signatures too and many of their songs exceed 10 minutes in length. The band won the ninth annual Independent Music Awards Vox Pop vote for their Album "In the Countryside". This band is definitely one to check out if you haven't already.
