The Basics Of Tree Trimming

By Kerri Stout

Trees in parks, streets, and homes often need maintenance through pruning and trimming occasionally due to various reasons. Maintenance is done for three primary reasons, that is, safety, aesthetics, and health of people and property. The health, safety, and aesthetics of the surroundings are sometimes highly dependent on tree trimming. The importance of trimming trees and general tips to adhere to are highlighted in this article.

Properly done trimming can result in an improvement in the aesthetics of vegetation to suit various requirements. Trimming can help to maintain the shape and appearance of trees to help in beautification of a property. However, when doing the job, one should not try to impose unnatural size or shape on the plant because it requires removal of too much foliage and plant body. That can cause a lot of damage than good to the plant.

The safety of property and people is sometimes ensured by trimming trees around them. For instance, injuries or damages can be sustained after weak or broken branches fall off a plant. The vision of motorists can be blocked or obstructed by plants growing on roads resulting into accidents. Finally, tall trees growing close to utility lines can be a cause for many hazards such as electrical shock and fires.

In Spring Hill FL, landowners are required by the law to contact and permit power companies to remove plants growing near utility lines. One may be charged by the law for refusing linemen the permission to trim off plants near the lines. Cover against damages and injury resulting from refusal of permission to linemen is also not provided by insurance companies.

Trees like any other living organism are susceptible to attack by diseases. Diseases can attack any part of the tree including the leaves, stems, roots, and fruits. To save such trees, it may be necessary to trim or prune off some of the infected branches and limbs. Trimming crowns can also improve airflow, which is beneficial to most trees. Branches that cross or rub against each other should also be trimmed to prevent them from falling off unexpectedly.

Lack of experience in this job can make it very dangerous besides being physically demanding like it already is. As such, one should seek the help of a professional service provider if they lack the skills needed. Additionally, plants trimmed during dormant state do better than those trimmed while in active growth. Dormant state minimizes distraction done to growth and prepares the plant to resume growth during seasons of active growth.

It is good to always consider branch size before it is trimmed. It is advised to only remove the small branches. Unless there is a good reason, big branches should be retained. Weak branches that are shaped like a V should be the target of the removal process. Those that are strong with a U shape should not be touched.

Collars and ridges of branches must be given special attention during the process. Here, one must avoid trimming the branches too short or long from the stem. Short good-looking stubs should be produced after completing the job. Finally, personal safety must come first in the whole process.
