Transform Your Propane Tank Into A Work Of Art

By Cath Buhr

There are many reasons to love propane. It's a clean burning fuel that can be quite inexpensive to use to heat your home and run appliances. It also provides you with a source of energy even when the power goes off. Of course, you do have to have a large tank behind your home to store the propane and rather than settle for a dull, bland and ordinary tank, spice it up with a coat of paint and turn it into something really amazing.

Generally there are requirements as to how far away from your house the tank must be, so while you might be tempted to simply hide it behind your house, that simply might not be the best location. One idea would be to build a fence or garden wall in front of the tank and surround the area with potted plants. A picket fence surrounded by flowers also might be an attractive idea. You simply need to try and have it blend in with the landscaping already in place in your yard. So use the same type of flowers and fencing that you have used elsewhere.

Another option would be to get really creative and apply some paint to your propane tank. Instead of a propane tank, transform it into an enormous watermelon or a yellow submarine. Paint it the colors of your favorite football team or turn it into an oversized corn on the bob. You could also paint it light blue with white clouds or even have some type of mural painted on the tank.

There are some safety steps that are necessary when painting a propane tank. It is important to paint the tank with a light-reflecting color, and many states have regulations about the colors you can use. A dark color will absorb heat which heats up the tank which causes the propane to expand, so check out the regulations first before painting. Also remove any rust from the tank and paint the tank using primer and paints that prohibit rust.

If you do lease your tank, it would be very wise to ask the propane company if painting is allowed. You can certainly buy your tank and then paint it exactly the way you like. and it's not as expensive as you might think to buy a tank. Thrifty Propane, for example, will give you are free tank if you pre-buy a set amount of propane. If possible, pre-buy the propane when prices are low to not only get the free tank, but also save on your energy expenses for the year.

If you plan to have a tank with 500 to 1,000 gallons, you also have the option of burying your propane tank. This costs a bit more but, of course, the installation process also is bit more intensive. Still, you won't have a giant propane tank visible in your yard, and that might be very important to you. Thrifty Propane can help with the purchase of a tank or provide Ohio propane delivery, Indiana propane delivery, Pennsylvania propane delivery as well as six other states.
