Wild & Wacky Maui Activities

By Ella Hemmings

If you are heading to Maui, there's certainly nothing wrong with spending your days lazing away at the beach. However, if you would like to enjoy something a bit more extreme, the following activities might be perfect for you.

For ocean lovers, it can be fun to really get beneath the surface and take a look at the world under the sea. There are several companies that offer submarine tours where you head down and watch as fish, turtles and other sea life go about their daily adventures. Natural reefs often are part of the scenery as well as interesting artificial reefs, perhaps the wreck of ancient sea vessel or a World War II-era airplane. Of course, you also could consider a snorkeling adventure or a scuba diving trek.

An extreme adventurer also might enjoy taking in the views of Maui from the sky and while a helicopter tour might be one way to do it, there are a few other options to consider. Paragliding, for instance, is a great way to take the sites of Maui and enjoy the thrill of soaring through the sky. Zipline tours are another option and provide a way for adventurers to learn more about Maui's unique landscapes, flora and fauna. There are several different zipline companies on the island, offering a variety of tours.

If you plan on taking the trip to Hana, this is a fantastic all-day adventure. One stop along the way that you should consider is a visit to the Ka'eleku Caverns. It takes about an hour or so to go on a tour of the caverns, which are quite unique. Then you can head back on the Hana Highway for some more windy roads, single-lane bridges and breathtaking ocean views.

Of course, everyone loves to spend some time at the beach, but if you crave a bit more adventuring than splashing around at the shore, you might want to think about taking surfing lessons. While Maui has some good waves, this island is better suited to windsurfing than traditional surfing so that might be a great option to consider.
