Student Life Is Hard Work - Let Us Help Make It A Bit Easier

By Carl Messenger-Lehmann

You've already shown you can make good decisions by choosing to attend Brock University. This is the first of many decisions you will have to make during your university life. Studentlofts.ca wants to help make at least one decision an easy one - where should you live? We know student life is hard work, but finding the perfect place to live shouldn't be.

Choose a place to live that feels comfortable and someplace you will be happy to come home to each day. You'll be spending a lot of time in your new home, so don't settle for someplace you can deal with, but choose a space you can't wait to move in to. Get to know the area. Go exploring so you know your way around campus and the surrounding area. Get involved. Join campus groups that are affiliated with what you love, whether it is playing sports, creating art, or making music.

Chinese Evergreen - the perfect accent plant that can tolerate low to bright light as long as it is not direct sunlight. When the top inch of soil is dry it is time to add water. But do not over water because this greenery is susceptible to root rot. Yellowing under leaves is a sign of not enough water. Aspidistra - known as the cast-iron plant because it is tough as nails, this leafy green can handle any light except for direct sunlight. The less light is is exposed to the water it needs, so be careful not to overfill.

Eternity Plant - requires watering only 3 times a month and requires minimal indirect lighting. Another great plant for beginners because you can actually bring this baby back to life! Lucky Bamboo - so named because they are believed to bring luck to their surroundings, they need need very little care. They require bright indirect sunlight and about an inch of water in their pebble-filled base. Peace Lily - has a tell when it is thirsty besides turning brown; it droops a bit. Medium indirect sunlight is perfect, and the leaves will yellow if it is receiving too much light. African Violet - a great way to add color to your greenery, these blossom about 9 months out of the year. Water them only when you feel the top soil is dry and keep them in moderate lighting conditions out of direct sunlight.

Stay connected to home. Talk to family and friends on a regular basis. They want to hear how you're doing at school so make it a regular habit to connect with loved ones. Ask for help if you need it. This adjustment isn't always easy, but help is available. If you're struggling emotionally, talk to a counselor or friend. If academics are harder than you thought, look for a tutor or speak to your professor about extra help.
