Uses For Switchable Privacy Glass

By Enid Hinton

Everyone desires solitude from time to time and many times this luxury is not possible because of what we are doing or where we are located. Especially in employment situations maintaining focus can be difficult when sharing space with others even when they are not in the immediate vicinity. Many businesses have initiated a policy that involves using switchable privacy glass for office enclosures as well as cubicles.

This laminated windowpane consists of polymer liquid crystal film that is sandwiched between layers of glass and layers of conductive material. The final effect is a window that is electrified and with the flip of a switch can change from translucent to opaque. When electricity is applied to the film inside the panes the liquid crystals line up to form an opaque barrier that cannot be seen through.

This product is available for business as well as private use. Many hospital emergency rooms have chosen to use them to separate patients because they are more cost efficient as a permanent resource than drapes that need cleaning and replacing on a regular basis. Dental offices use them as a space saving device because they take much less room than regular walls between clients. They can easily be cleaned and sanitized without disruption of patients or medical personnel.

Conference rooms can be transformed into viewing rooms by using the opaque mode as screens for projection of sales techniques or services offered to clients. The benefits of being able to command a private area for clients to wait or sign contracts cannot be measured equitably. On a retail level shop owners are able to use these windows as sales posters through projection onto the opaque surfaces.

The modern trend in residential building features large windows that cover much of the front of the home as well as skylights to take advantage of natural lighting. Designing homes with this type of windows allows home owners to use minimal window coverings and affords them the option of shutting out exterior viewing of their homes interior. This treatment also cuts ninety eight percent of the sun's damaging UV rays, protecting flooring and furniture.

These windows need to be ordered in advance and measurements must be precise. Once they are built they cannot be cut to size. The only deviation from normal installation is that an electrician will be needed to install the electrical hook ups. If requested the purchaser can obtain remote controls and timers to be installed at the same time. Timers help to regulate the amount of time the windows are in each mode and prolong the life of the treatment.

This treatment has found uses in vehicles also. Tour buses and motor homes find it very helpful for passengers when blocking bright sun light or at night for sleeping. The windows come in several colors that can blend with most decors in homes or vehicles. Consumers can choose from bronze, grey, green or clear tints. There is also some limited use of this process in private vehicles. It is controlled by individual state regulations but highly available for private individuals.

This new window treatment offers a cost effective means of supplying security as well as privacy from outside sources while still allowing natural light into the building.
