Discover The Advantages Of 24 Hour In Home Care For The Elderly

By Darrell F. Schroyer

Growing old can be scary for many people. Physical health begins to decline, hearing and eyesight are not as keen as they once were, and physical limitations make even daily activities challenging. If a person is suffering with symptoms of dementia or Alzheimer's, living alone can be dangerous. Individuals who dread the thought of moving into a nursing facility can consider 24 hour in home care instead.

Allowing an elderly person to remain at home with a live in caregiver gives the family peace of mind. Caregivers provide assistance all day and night, allowing family members to live their own lives knowing their loved one is safe and in good hands. When 24-hour care is necessary, two individuals will usually share the schedule.

The caregiver will help with all personal grooming. This includes bathing, dressing, oral hygiene, and hair care. If the person suffers with limited mobility, caregivers can assist them with walking to reduce the risk of accidents. People working as live-in caregivers have special training to transfer physically handicapped patients safely.

Remembering to take medication and proper dosing can be a problem with elderly people. Caregivers will remind patients when it is time to take medication and monitor them to make sure they take it. Only registered nurses are allowed to administer medication to patients in some states.

Caregivers will be there to cook meals and monitor nutrition. They will prepare healthy meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner following all dietary restrictions. They will help with all light housekeeping duties. This includes mopping, dusting, vacuuming, changing bed linens, doing laundry, washing dishes, and taking out the trash to maintain a sanitary living environment.

Caregivers assist with driving the elderly person to any medical appointments, the grocery store, the bank, social activities, and other destinations. This saves from having to hire a taxi or ride the bus. They may also offer companionship during travel for vacations or family visits

One of the most valuable services a live-in caregiver provides is constant companionship. They will keep the elderly person active and engaged. This may include going on walks, playing games, doing puzzles, and participating in other activities that stimulate the mind and keep the body active.

When given a choice, many elderly people prefer to live in the home. The thought of moving into a nursing facility is scary and depressing. Having the chance to live out their later years in familiar surroundings improves quality of life.
