By Olive Pate

Stories about the past fall into two major groups; myths and legends. Myths are set in a remote past, probably in a different world while legends are set in a recent past in the world of today. Both of them are considered real stories. Mythology books for teens comprise of a variety of myths from different cultures and civilizations in the world.

Since mythology literature represents a form of story-telling in such a way that people can relate, it becomes excellent reading material for teenagers. They are able to relate to people or events in these stories and learn from experiences of characters. Although the setting is in the past, human relationships and interactions remain the same today as they used to be. As a result, these stories are a secure environment for people to learn.

In a typical mythology book, there are stories from than one part of the globe. Although the stories vary in content and structure, they all share aspects of human relationships and associations such as marriage, love, war and religion. In addition, you will always find a hero or heroine who did great things for other people amidst challenges. Norms and culture of the particular community are also reflected.

Myths were not written down when they were first told. The creators told other people who told other people until the story came down to the generations that were able to read and write. As a result, there are bound to several stories describing the same people or event. As the story was handed generation to generation, some minor aspects changed or were exaggerated. In most stories, however, the significant aspects remain the same.

Mythologies are from oral cultures where stories were told and handed down to generations. Almost every culture has its own myths and legends making up hundreds of stories from hundreds of cultures. When they were created, their initial intentions were to entertain, pass time and inspire people. The greatest stories that are alive today are those from Greece and Egypt.

Greece stories tell of Greek heroes and heroines, cities, people, love, goddesses, gods, and events. A teenager reading some of these stories will learn about the great cities of Sparta and the magnificent city of Athens. There also numerous stories about gods and goddesses such as Athena and Zeus. The Greek people had many gods and goddesses, and each represented something in their lives such as war, fertility, agriculture or love.

Other interesting people from Greece include King Xerxes, Themistocles, Achilles, Medusa and Helen of Troy. In Egypt, the setting is different but the stories are equally interesting. There are stories of the pyramids and the Pharaohs who were the kings of Egypt. Teenagers will find the Egyptian burial rites, gods and heroes an interesting read.

Myths are entertaining not only for teenagers but everyone, and that is probably why most of them have been adapted for cinema. However, reading them is a better experience as it allows one to connect with the people and events in this story.
