A Disaster Survival Kit Is Critical Should You Need To Leave Your Home

By April Briggs

Disasters strike when you least expect them. You must be ready when they happen because, after they do, there is very rarely the time to deal with the important elements for living safely. You need to have a grouping of materials that will allow you to get someplace safe and that kit has many names. One of them is bug out bag and another is a disaster survival kit.

You will read things that will tell you to have at least three days worth of supplies to survive during those first critical days after a problem. That includes water and food, of course. Other things that must be taken will help you see the necessity of being prepared for just such an event.

The need for water, at least a gallon a day for each person, can not be overlooked. You can go a for a few days without having a shower and a bath can be found in a local river, lake or stream, however, drinking water is vital for any survival attempt. Finding a running source of water, such as that clean river or stream will be critical, but taking bottled water will be the first line of defense.

Water purification pills can be obtained at many survivalist stores as well as pharmacies. These will help you clear water that you find in some rivers. They are placed in the bottle or other container, such as a milk jug. Water is introduced and shaken and it will then need to stand for a while. Packing a bottle of bleach will assist in this as well.

Pack enough food for three days as well as the water. Do not pack a lot of canned goods as these will weigh everyone down. The dried snacks that most everyone has in their kitchen cabinets are a good choice. Most of these are fairly nutritious and they are lightweight. These are often dehydrated and can be eaten dry or re hydrated with a little water. They may not be as nice as a big beef sandwich, but they are life sustaining.

The popularity of dehydrated foods, in general, make these items easy to find. There are a number of meals designed for survival eating and these can be packed quickly. They will need a little water to make to make a meal and many people use these even for camping trips.

Packing a tent or tarp will be needed for a covering from rain and the colder wind you may be subject to. The next thing to consider is personal sleeping kits such as a sleeping bag or bed roll. You will need your rest, each night, as you will be on the move for a good portion of each day.

Do not forget to bring along any medications you or any member of your party needs on a day to day basis. A can opener, in case you find things you can use, will be a good thing to have. A good knife, a first aid kit and a hand crank radio will be helpful and should be part of this critical bug out kit.
