Information That You Need About Treatment For Heroin Addiction

By Steven Martin

Drug addiction will only have negative impacts on the behavior and performance of an individual due to the negative effects of the drug on the brain. Drugs whether hard or soft will promote the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, affect the employment of an individual which ultimately leads to the wastage of manpower in the society. The article explains key points in Treatment for Heroin addiction.

The rehabilitation method known as the pharmacological method has been discovered through scientific research to reduce the intake of drugs and also make it easier for the patients to continue with the rehabilitation program. The method involves using other drugs to help in dealing with the addiction to another drug. The drug has been tested to ensure that it does not bring about the same behavior changes as the addictive drug.

Both the addictive drug and rehabilitating drug of the pharmacological method will work on the same receptors. However, the rehabilitative drug will not create behavioral changes similar to those of the drug. The three types of the drugs include, antagonists to block receptors, agonists to activate receptors and partial agonists that activate receptors but create a small effect. The types are classified according to the manner in which the drugs acts on the receptors.

Withdrawal symptoms are mandatory for any rehabilitation process. The patient might have severe vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and pain that often prompts patients to quit the rehabilitation. The withdrawal symptoms vary from one patient to another. To help patients cope with the withdrawal symptoms during the detoxification stage, some drugs are used in reducing the symptoms.

The drugs used in the pharmacological method are taken in different ways that is either orally, sublingually or through injections. Methadone an agonist drug is one of the medications taken orally. The oral administration ensures it acts slowly as required. Buprenorphine, a partial agonist, is taken either orally or sublingually. Lastly, the Naltrexone, an antagonist that is injected into the body monthly.

Second treating method is done on outpatients and is known as a behavioral method. It is categorized into cognitive behavioral therapy and contingency management. Contingency management promotes rehabilitation by awarding the patients every time they register a negative drug test. In cognitive rehabilitation, the idea of the patient about drugs is changed, and skills about stress management are offered.

Most patients will only require one of the two main methods in the rehabilitation program. However, a few need a combination of both methods. The use of both methods is more effective for the specific patients as compared to the individual methods. To decide on the method to be used on a patient, the doctor will assess the needs of the patient and select the most appropriate.

Due to different needs, the treatment methods, medications, and methods will differ between the patients. The doctor will assess the needs of the patient and settle for the treatment he/she finds most appropriate. The guardian of a patient may also help a doctor decide on the best treatment method for the patient.
