Enjoy The Peninsula With A Door County Bike Tour

By Christine Fisher

Planning ahead for a vacation can make all the difference between a memorable time and a disaster. There are some people traveling on their own who just decide to wing a vacation, see where the road takes them and worry about accommodations, weather and food as they come. All that is perfectly fine, but most prefer at least a little planning. This is probably true when contemplating a Door County bike tour.

Wisconsin is an amazing state with an abundance of natural beauty from south to north. It is also a state where one needs to take into account the weather patterns inherent to its location. If you are bicycling, the summer months seem the most conducive to success. It should not be too hot or too cold during this time and most attractions will be open and accessible to visitors.

When you are making plans for your tour, your might want to think about Sturgeon Bay. The town is located centrally and could be a great starting place for you. Visitors really enjoy the great maritime museum and the historical museum as well. There are find restaurants, interesting galleries representing local and national artists and a wonderful shoreline that attracts bikers, hikers, and fishermen.

If conditions are favorable, you should think about cycling up to visit the lighthouse at Cana Island. You can find it in Bailey's Harbor which is a good bike ride north of Egg Harbor and Sturgeon Bay. The view from the gallery deck is stunning. You are able to see miles and miles of Lake Michigan and Door Peninsula. There are times when water floods the causeway though, making water boots necessary.

While you are visiting Bailey's Harbor you should check out Kangaroo Lake. It is the largest lake in Door County and the views are incredible. If you want to explore the preserves however, you should be aware that there are no restrooms, trash cans, or water available. The area is carefully preserved and a wonderful place to photograph the extensive wildlife. You may even want to stay for the night at one of the housekeeping cottages.

If you keep traveling north to the tip of the peninsula, you will come to Newport State Park, a wilderness designated park, the only one in Wisconsin. It is located at Ellison's Bay and is a popular destination for bikers. Not every trail accommodates bikers however, so you will need some maps to decide which trails to follow.

Door County is famous for its cherries, and the middle of summer is the perfect time to do some picking. Many orchards are open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to pick as many cherries as they like. You will not even have to worry about buying a bucket as they are generally provided.

Cycling your way around this area will really allow you to take full advantage of all the natural beauty it possesses. It will create great memories and great stories for you to tell your family and friends for years to come.
