Facts Regarding Cavalier King Puppies

By Betty Murphy

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel refers to a toy dog according to the KCA classification. The breed owes its origin to the United Kingdom and has become one of the most popular dog breeds in many countries. Starting in the year 2000, the popularity of the dog has grown enormously in the United States to a point that it ranks 18th as the most popular pure-breed dog in the United States. Cavalier King puppies are a perfect choice for anyone looking to buy a dog.

Historically, Cavalier Kings were lap dogs and small for spaniels. Full-grown adults are normally tinier in size in comparison to spaniel breeds. According to standards, the breed is supposed to grow to a height of 12-13 inch when fully grown. The weight ranges between 10-18 pounds. The tail should not be docked, whereas the coat should be moderate in length and silky. Coats are not allowed to be curly, but a moderate wave is permitted.

Ears, legs, tails, and feet have featuring on in adult dogs. The featuring on feet is an important trait in the breed. Most people confuse English Toy Spaniels for Cavalier Kings and vice versa. The confusion is often caused by the great physical similarity between the two breeds given that the breed only diverged from each other only 100 years ago. Before that, only one breed of the two breeds existed.

Coat colors come in four recognized varieties. The first color variety has a white-colored body with chestnut markings. When the dog is colored like this, it is termed as a Blenheim. The name Blenhein comes from the Blenhein Palace. The second color category is made of a chestnut spot placed at the center of the forehead. The name Blenheim spot is given to that spot.

The third color is made of tan and black. The rest of the coat is black but has tan highlights on the legs, tails, eyebrows, and cheeks. When the dog is tan and black in color, it is called King Charles. The fourth coat color is tricolor. The body is colored black and white, but there are tan markings on inner legs, cheeks, ears, tail, and eyebrows. This color is referred to as Prince Charles.

This breed is playful, affectionate, patient, and very eager to please. These qualities make the breed a good choice for family pets, because it coexists well with other pets and dogs. It is also great with children. They socialize well with other breeds and are great at adapting to new environment, location, or family. They can be raised in country as well as city life.

The breed ranks 44th in the list of intelligent dogs. They learn fast and are good at working and obedience training. They are active in sports too. They have always been successful in obedience, conformation shows, and agility. Their gentleness and sweet nature makes them good as therapy dogs. They are very comfortable with long walks and are happy to sleep on the couch.

Cavalier King like chasing after moving objects, including vehicles. This makes them not very wise in the streets when not under supervision. They also become friends with anybody, including strangers. Thus they are poor as guard dogs. However, they are a threat to birds and small pets because of their strong hunting instincts.
