For Sponge Blasting OH Is Worth Visiting

By Joyce Phillips

In the cleaning and surface preparation world, sponge blasting has been introduced as a relatively new technology. The method makes use of sponge as the abrasive media and is thus grouped under abrasive cleaning. Compressed air under pressure is used to propel the sponge towards the surface intended to be cleaned. This process is performed by use of a special apparatus. When in search of Sponge Blasting OH should be given priority.

When the abrasive makes contact with the target surface, it absorbs the energy generated from the collision and it flattens. Thus, sponge is a very useful abrasive media because it prevents the damage of surfaces by absorbing the shock energy that comes from the impact. The abrasive also absorbs most of the airborne dust generated from the process. Because of these benefits and many others, this method has gained a lot of popularity and use in many places.

During the process, the abrasive media gets poured into a component called a blast feed unit which is found in the machine employed in this procedure. The abrasive is stirred mechanically through various means in the blast feed unit before it is fed into a screw auger port. Screw auger port is found at the base of the section and usually rotates as the components are fed into it. The abrasive media is propelled by pressurized air produced inside the auger port.

The media is channeled through a hose and then through a nozzle. The nozzle is directed at the surface that needs to be cleaned. Usually, the media comes out of the nozzle at a speed of between 15 to 100 meters per second. The pressure can be adjusted depending on the kind of surface being worked on. When the media comes in contact with the surface, it produces a scrubbing and cleaning action that is similar to sanding effect.

Sponge media is an efficient cleaner and its usefulness serves in a wide range of industries. Some of the uses include nuclear decontamination, depainting projects, railway rolling stock maintenance, oil and gas inspection, and shipyard repairing. The media is used in removal of coating and general industrial rust from various surfaces. Civil engineering tasks also find use for the media.

Such projects may include removing soot, clearing environmental pollution, stains and graffiti from constructions such as buildings and bridges. It is also employed in various interior renovation projects. For example, it may be used to clean aircraft interiors during maintenance and repair since it produces less dust.

This is an outstanding method to be used during surface preparation. It can be used for removal of a number of unwanted materials from a surface. It is also a good method for selective removal of delicate individual layers of coating from a surface. Industries where this method is used include forming, polishing and deburring.

The sponge that is used in this process can be recycled 100 percent. As such, the method is very friendly to the environment. There are also no toxic materials produced when working, which makes the method safer. Physical harm is minimized a lot, which eliminates the need to wear very heavy protective gear when working.
