Lawyers are people who specialize in the field of law. Some of the areas they specialize include international, environmental, bankruptcy, maritime, and probate law among others. Also, since the field of law is divided into two major categories, that is, civil and criminal, lawyers can also specialize in the cases they pick. For example, lawyer who specialize in the environmental law act as legal representatives for waste disposal companies, construction firms, and interest group among other corporates. Although there are many lawyers who work for companies and governments, most lawyers work in the private practice. In the private practice, lawyers work in the civil or criminal law. While working in the criminal category, they provide legal counsel to defendants. Lawyers that work in civil law offer clients with assistance in matters related to contracts, leases, mortgages, trusts, titles, litigations, and wills among others.

A number of lawyers direct their focus to public relations, with an interest to change enforcement of the law in some areas. As a result, they pick up cases based on their impact. These lawyers may specialize in offering services to special groups. Such case filings are often aimed at forcing the government to change application of a certain law in some area.

A lawyer may work for a single client on a fulltime basis. Such a client may be the government, an organization, a person or a company. A house counsel is a term used to refer to a lawyer working for a company. They are tasked with offering legal advice and representation.

In a case where the client happens to be the government, the lawyer can be addressed by different titles. The job being handled and the level of government at which the offer their services determine the title used to address the lawyer. Those representing the public and people that are unable to hire lawyers personally are referred to as public defenders. In contrast to this, criminals undergo prosecution through the arms of prosecutors.
