What Manual Retractable Awnings Entail

By Amy Jackson

The equipment that is usually fitted at the doorways or windows to protect them against sun and rain are known as awnings. This product also protects the interior of the house from strong winds. For example, in places where an awning lacks, rays from the sun would damage furniture and other furnishings in the house. The products also block rain water from getting into buildings. Manual retractable awnings are among the many types of awnings in existence.

Basically, awnings are made of two main parts, that is, the roof and the frame. The frame can be made from a wide range of material including galvanized steel or aluminum. The steel is galvanized in order to prevent rusting and to promote durability. Aluminum is naturally rust-proof. Metal frame are usually very strong and often last a lifetime without requiring to be replace.

For the durability of the whole structure, maintenance should be done on a regular basis. It is wise to check the structural integrity and do maintenance on the awning at least once a year. For people living around the coastal region, the framework of their awnings should be checked at least two times in a year. Coastal regions are normally very humid and this causes the rusting process to occur faster.

It is important to apply finish on the frame to increase protection. If the fabric of the awning happens to be stained by weather elements, the stains can be removed using dish soap and a brush. Severe stains can be removed using vinegar and bleach. Professionals are also available for hire in cases where the stains cannot be removed by the methods given above.

License from the government is not necessarily needed when one is installing an awning. Although in cases where one is installing extremely large awnings, a license may be needed in order to do so. The license is issued by the city of town authority. Homeowner organizations may at times make it compulsory for a new homeowner in a particular region to have an awning installed.

In cases where homeowner associations demand that homeowners install awnings, they may regulate the size of the awnings as well as the color among other features. Because of these requirements, one I advised to always check with their city or homeowner association before having awnings installed. Failure to do this may attract a penalty in the form of fines. Also, one may be forced to bring down the awning after installation.

Awnings assist in reducing the cost of cooling, which is one of the major factors why people install them. Cooling cost savings usually vary from one location to another. In certain cases, a person can save up to 20 percent on their power bill each month. When people in a whole neighborhood fix awnings in their homes, these savings can be significant.

Savings are more profound during peak periods. During these periods, utility companies are able to experience less consumption. This in turn saves money for the companies as well as the public. As such, the decision to install an awning is a great one.
