The former ordinarily costs less, and the latter more. Also, paintwork or coating will probably not have any adverse effect on the strength of the wood, while that is possible in chemical impregnation.

Fire retardants are more common than we give them credit for. Some common everyday things are actually coated with these substances, from Christmas trees to other trifles. These are small things, though, and houses need some deliberate tinkering all on their own.
