Useful Information Regarding Vinyl Liner Leak Detection

By Christopher Thompson

There are many problems that result from the presence of a leak in the liner of vinyl pools. Repairing and remediating these leaks can be very costly. When a leak occurs beyond a certain level in a pool that has a cover, the cover can damaged a lot. The cover develops wrinkles as a result of pulling away from the pool surface. The only way to prevent the wrinkles is to never allow water in the structure to go below a certain point by refilling appropriately. This is worth knowing about Vinyl liner leak detection.

In case the leakage continues for a long duration, it may lead to damage of the floor of the pool. The kinds of damages which can be caused on the walls of the pool include cracking and flacking. The severity of the damages caused is normally dependent on the level of leakage and the duration the problem is left to happen. Finding and fixing all causes of leakage is the only true solution.

Leaks in a vinyl pool can be indicated by several different indicators. In in-ground pools, most leaks occur in the drains, fittings, skimmers, steps, and the liner. One should pay close attention to leaks that cause a drop in water level up to a given level where water seems to stabilize. That means that there is a leak at a point above the level where water level stabilizes.

The installation of steps in vinyl pools is usually done by cutting the liner and having a plastic strip screwed tightly over rubber gasket. One can clearly see the strip at the point where the liner ends and the fiberglass step begins. Leakage in fiberglass steps can occur on either sides and at the bottom strip. One should wear a mask and investigate the steps keenly. Any voids where tiny leaves have been sucked are good indicators of a leakage.

Leakage is also known to occur at the point of installation of pool lights. Installation of pool lights is done using circular plates gasketed against the liner and screwed tightly. The point where light cord leaves the water also form a possible point of leakage. Pool lights can be installed in other ways that minimizes chances of leakage.

Another good place to investigate for leakage is the liner. This should be done by switching time clocks and pumps off. A marker pen or duct tape should then be used to mark water level in the pool. The pool should be given 24 hours before the new level of water is investigated. One should know that there is a leakage if the water drops by a huge level.

A significant drop in water level is an indication of a leak being present. Every inch of the pool should be inspected to detect a leakage. One should remember that multiple points of leakage may exist.

One can involve a professional if the process is too much for them. Professionals have experience in detecting leaks and can do the process much faster. However, the process may take several hours or days if the leakage is small and too hidden.
